Diversity in the workplace refers to the variety of differences between individuals in an organisation which encompasses race, gender, ethnic groups, age, religion, sexual orientation, disability, and educational background. In a diverse and inclusive workplace, the differences between individuals should be appreciated and each of their different characteristics and attributes valued. Inclusivity, equity, and diversity have been found to have many positive impacts on businesses, such as higher productivity levels, increased retention, and overall business success, among many more.

This article explores some of the initiatives that were designed to help the insurance industry work towards becoming more inclusive.

Dive In: The Festival for Diversity and Inclusion in Insurance

Dive In is the international and award-winning festival for diversity and inclusion in insurance. Dive in began in 2015 and has since grown exponentially, with events taking place globally across 32 countries worldwide, and over 10,000 attendees. The three-day festival promotes best practices in diversity and inclusion within the global insurance industry and aims to accelerate progress, with practical tools and advice for how to create a positive change.

Over the years the festival has welcomed hundreds of speakers who covered a broad range of topics from building an inclusive LGBT+ culture, to creating awareness of mental health issues. Many of the inspiring and insightful speeches given were recorded and are available to watch on the Dive In Festival website.

Women in Insurance Awards

The Women in Insurance Awards is the premier awards for showcasing the achievements of inspirational women across all sectors of the insurance market. They also provide a platform for discussions regarding how inclusion within the sector can be improved with the aim of moving the equality agenda forward. This enables topics such as the gender pay gap and the underrepresentation of women in senior roles in the industry to be challenged. The awards acknowledge the progress that the insurance industry has made in becoming an inclusive, equal opportunities sector whilst recognising that there is still a long way to go.

50 over Fifty Initiative

The 50 over Fifty Initiative celebrates the contribution of women over 50 to the UK insurance industry and addresses the intersectionality between gender and ageism. The initiative requires women aged over 50 currently working in the UK insurance industry to be nominated. Fifty women, from a diverse cross-section, will then be selected, and their images and biographies will be exhibited with the aim of highlighting the great work undertaken by women over 50, from all levels and all parts of the insurance industry. The exhibition will launch on June 9th with an event at WTW in London.

Galejay has sponsored the 50 over Fifty initiative as we recognise the importance of working towards breaking the gender age bias to help make the insurance industry a more inclusive place to work. We want to celebrate the contributions that these talented women make to the insurance industry and give them the recognition that they deserve.
